You could say members of the town's Rotary Club are the Johnny Appleseeds of Danvers. The club recently donated 40 saplings to re-establish the apple orchard at Endicott Park. The hope is to revive apple picking at Endicott Park and eventually also sell the apples at the Danvers Rotary Farmers Market. Previously, only a handful of apple trees remained in the park's back orchard, in the field adjacent to the playground just off Curtis Way, the loop road inside the park. The aging trees had been slowly coming down. The donation was spurred by Rotary International President Ian H.S. Riseley, who challenged every Rotary Club to plant a tree for each of its members by Earth Day 2018. Danvers Rotary President Bill Nolan took up the challenge. He reached out to Christopher Sanborn, the town's director of natural resources and harbormaster, who suggested replanting the orchard. The 40 apple trees cost $3,500. Many of them have already been planted by students at Essex Tech.
