At the Rotary District 7930 Installation on Thursday, June 25th, one of the evening's most meaningful moments was the presentation of the Rotary Award for Excellence in Service to Humanity to Joan DiPietro Gardner.
The Rotary Award for Excellence in Service to Humanity recognizes non-Rotarians and non-Rotaractors, including partners and spouses of Rotarians and Rotaractors, who have demonstrated exemplary humanitarian service through Rotary. It celebrates individuals whose quiet dedication, leadership, and commitment to helping others have made a lasting impact on their communities while advancing Rotary's mission of Service Above Self.
Joan was nominated by District Governor Pooja Singla and Stoneham Rotary co-president, Sharon Iovanni, in recognition of decades of extraordinary service, much of it behind the scenes.
Although her husband's name may have appeared on badges over the years as Club President, Governor's Aide, District Governor, and in many other Rotary leadership roles, Joan was beside him every step of the way.
She attended nearly every club service project, district event, training session, Zone Institute, the Rotary International Assembly, and two Rotary International Conventions. She offered thoughtful guidance on leadership, messaging, administration, and countless decisions that helped shape not only his Rotary journey but the success of many district initiatives. More than anything, she was his sounding board, coach, and greatest source of encouragement.
Beyond Rotary, Joan built an exceptional 36-year career as a civil engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, leading complex projects, mentoring outstanding teams, and serving our nation with professionalism, integrity, and distinction. She retired as Deputy Chief of Operations Division for the New England District.
Whether serving her country professionally or supporting Rotary's mission through decades of volunteerism, Joan has consistently demonstrated that leadership is measured not by recognition received, but by the lives touched.
Leadership is rarely a solo journey. Every successful leader is supported by people who give generously of themselves without seeking recognition. Joan has been one of those people throughout her life, strengthening organizations, supporting leaders, and making a lasting difference in the lives of others.
Reflecting on the honor, her husband, David Gardner, shared:
"If there is one thing I have learned over the past 40-plus years, it is that every accomplishment people attribute to me has your fingerprints on it."
District 7930 proudly congratulates Joan DiPietro Gardner on this well-deserved honor and thanks her for a lifetime of service to humanity.
