Members and guests of the Marblehead Harbor Rotary recently welcomed PDG Joan Arsenault and Erin Bonney Casey for an update about efforts to restore the Ipswich River to its former vibrancy. Joan spoke briefly about the assistance that is being supplied by a significant Rotary grant. Erin, Planning and Resiliency Program Manager for the Ipswich River Watershed Association, covered the 40+ mile long makeup of the cities and towns that draw water from the Ipswich River, the fact that the river has been identified as one of our country’s most endangered rivers, and the challenges ahead to educate the public on conservation methods that, if implemented, will ensure the river’s healthy future. While Marblehead does not draw its water from the Ipswich, the conservation information imparted by Joan and Erin was invaluable to the members, as that information applies to communities, both adjacent to the Watershed and outside its boundaries.
