The Marblehead Rotary Club is proud to introduce its seven 2018 scholarship recipients:Derek Marino is heading to Bates College in the fall. A class leader and award-winning student/athlete, Derek carries himself with humility and maturity even after having “lettered” in Football, Basketball and Baseball as well as being named the Captain of many of these teams. He was awarded the “Educational Athletics Achievement Award” a recognition from Massachusetts for community service and leadership.
Erika Massaro will be attending either Northeastern University or Tulane University in the Fall. She plans to study Public Health and Biology with the hope of pursuing a pre-medicine academic track. Massaro is proud of her outside involvements including being a volunteer at Beverly Hospital and tutoring students in Lynn and Salem through the North Shore Men(Tu)tors program – Massaro being a Co-President of that group.
Kimberly McLean will be going to Wentworth Institute of Technology this coming September. An honors student at Marblehead High School, McLean is most proud of being a member of the Leadership Council. She is also very interested in technology and plans to take this interest into college and study Mechanical Engineering. It is her hope that her background and research will lead her to identify and discover technologies that will help people in rural areas who lack the tools to advance their lives.
The fourth annual recipient of the Donald Humphreys Memorial Rotary Scholarship, George MacDonald, will be heading to Quinnipiac University to pursue his interest in health care. His grandfather honorably served in the United States military and was a veteran of the Korean War. It is for this reason, MacDonald is this year’s Donald Humphreys scholarship recipient.
The Marblehead Rotary Club awarded this year's four-year Randolph E. and Barbara K. Goodwin Memorial Scholarship to Anna Tyrell. Tyrell will matriculate at University of Virginia this September. She has had an active role conducting community services projects around the world and, as a result, plans to study International Relations at Virginia. Fueling this interest was Tyrell’s internship at Stone & Compass – a travel company that specializes in trips that support sustainable development goals – which could be economic, cultural preservation or agricultural in focus. From her many involvements, she was invited to join Stone & Compass to present a “sustainability” vision to the United Nations.
Lily Gillis is still deciding on which college she will choose to attend this coming September. From a long list of “acceptances”, Gillis plans to pursue a degree in Business. She is an honors student at Marblehead High School and an active member of Rotary’s Interact Club allowing her to volunteer and give back to her community. Gillis is also an athlete, running cross-country, winter tack and spring track at the Varsity level throughout her High School career. Gillis was honored to be elected Captain of the cross-country team in 2017. In 2018, Gillis and her father in combination with a charity group, entered the Boston Marathon and ran the event together.
Lilly Tapper will be going to Johnson & Wales University this coming September. An honors student at Marblehead High School, Tapper plans to major in Baking and Pastry Arts and hopes to open her own bakery when she graduates. Tapper is most proud of her volunteer work within the community. She is actively involved with the Cradles to Crayons, SPUR and Birthday Wishes organizations where she creates packages for homeless children, prepares meals for needy individuals and bakes birthday cakes for local shelters.
