5:00pm
At our next Rotary Wine Appreciation Fellowship evening in Rotary Districts 7790 and 7930, we will taste the following two wines:

#1 Grüner Veltliner - a grape variety that is grown primarily in Austria, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, but there are also producers in the US on Long Island (One Woman Wines), in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

Make sure that the Grüner Veltliner is nicely chilled, so almost straight from the fridge at about 40-45°F.

Suggested food pairings for the Grüner Veltliner:  a hearty meat with some crackers or bread, for example Austrian Speck, Italian Prosciutto, or maybe even a Landjäger sausage from Karl's Sausage Kitchen. Anything with garlic (shrimp scampi or Caesar salad);  Deviled eggs or duck liver pate might also be nice; or a soft blue cheese and pistachios on the side as well.

#2 Sangiovese - a grape varietal playing a major role in the profiles of Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino wines from Italy.  There are also amazing pure Sangioveses produced in Napa Valley.

The Sangiovese can be served at room temperature, though it depends a bit on the weather, so ideally cellar temperature i.e. about 60-65°F, rather than 70-80°F…

Suggested food pairings for Sangiovese: any Italian salami will do nicely, as well as pasta in tomato sauce, Italian meatballs, roasted meats, roasted veggies, etc.

Please purchase a bottle of each wine prior to our next evening, and prepare some appetizers based on the suggested food pairings, if you’d like to have something to nibble on while we taste the wines.

Yours in Rotary,
